Lichens and fungi play important roles in our lives—serving as bioindicators of environmental pollution, tools for geological estimation, a source of food, ingredients in perfumes, and more. The presentation will provide basic information, incorporating interesting facts about these organisms. The symbiotic structure, the role and function of lichens and fungi in natural ecosystems will be discussed. The presentation will also touch on lichen and fungi diversity, taxonomy, and studies in Armenia.
About the Speaker

Dr. Arsen Gasparyan has earned his doctoral degree in the field of lichenology at the Freie Universitat in Berlin. He has studied lichen diversity of Armenia since 2011. As a result of his research 4 lichen species new to science have been discovered and described. Moreover, his studies have revealed more than 200 new lichen species in Armenia. Recently, he has established “The Lichen Research and Conservation Group” at the A. Takhtajyan Institute of Botany NAS RA. Arsen is also an expert in the field of nature conservation and protected areas. From 2016 to 2021, he worked at the World Wide Fund for Nature Armenia branch office as a Conservation Officer.
